THE ORIGINS
‘Write me a Novel was born in October 2018 in Montréal. It seemed fun and aesthetically pleasing to write words on human bodies, so I decided to write the beginning of my novel on three of my friends. Their chemistry was so incredible, and I fell in love with the results, which made me want to try it again – this time a year later in Brighton. It was the first time I was hearing someone read my words out loud, and because I was deconstructing my work, by only painting a few parts, and making my words accessible to the viewer via a different canvas, something changed in the way I was perceiving my work.’ – Alice

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Write me a Novel is a project based on the idea that the writer is never alone in the creation of their work, but instead accompanied by the characters making their life and helping with the making of their artwork and, finally, the reader. Based on a short story of autofiction called You can go anywhere in Paris in under 30 minutes, the project revolves around the lives of three women who ultimately become one. Each woman has her own chapter and model, and each of them interact both on paper and in front of the camera. Although this short story will not be published, the viewer will be able to hear extracts from it, as well as discover the parts that were painted on the bodies in the photographs. We are thus making up new beginnings and endings with which to play with and write new stories – something that the viewer will be able to do in the ‘feedback’ section of the exhibition.

ABOUT ALICE JL PIERRE
Alice is a Brighton-based writer-photographer from France. She graduated from the University of Brighton with a Masters in Creative Writing and is currently working towards a PhD in photoliterature, and previously lived in Montréal, Québec, where she attended Concordia University for a BA in Western Society and Culture taught within the Liberal Arts College and a one-year diploma in Professional Photography.
Her short stories have been published in L’Organe Magazine, Concordia University’s French student magazine, for which she used to work as an Editor. More of her stories, as well as her poetry, have been published in different anthologies by University of Brighton’s students.
Inspired by authors such as Patti Smith, Virginie Despentes and Ernest Hemingway, Alice’s writing is also deeply influenced by the artists she grew up with, such as New Order, Ultravox and The Cure. Writing from experience, she finds the roots for her stories in her travels, from India to France, Cambodia to Canada, and England to Italy. These journeys into different cultures were at the origin of her passion for photography. With a particular interest in portraits, the human body, and its capacities, she has worked closely with dancers as well as musicians, and has recently been focusing on the facial expressions of various emotions and states of mind, as well as the connexion created between two bodies when put in front of the camera.
